It has finally been announced that Ghana’s plan of setting up a national airline carrier for the country is in its final stage and the airline would soon be operationalized. Which is incredible news. The country has been in a developmental ascendancy with regard to aviation travel. Notably the opening of the Sunyani Airport in the Bono Region, the build-out of the Kumasi International Airport, and the amping up of the Kotoka International Airport located in the heart of the capital and now Ghana’s airline carrier as an icing on the cake. Kindly stick to this article to the end as I give the full information and details of the Ghanaian Airline carrier which is in its final stages of being operational upon its announcements this month of December.
For a country that has tourism as one of its major economic boosters. It is only right to ensure that, people from all walks of life can move in and out of the country without experiencing any inconveniences whatsoever with flights bearing the county’s flags as a representative. In recent times Ghana has continuously invested heavily in air travel and it is evident with the current state of the major airports in the country. Though the country had not yet set up an International home-based airline carrier after the demise of Ghana Airways. However, talks of setting up a home-based career airline started as early as 2018 when the country signed a deal with Ethiopian Airlines a strategic investor.
The possibility of Ghana owning its airline carrier once again with the name Ghana Airlines had been in discussions and planning since then. Most of the foundations for this undertaking had been established by the country already having signed over 65 bilateral air service agreements with countries all over the world. This bilateral air service agreement allows the designated Airline of the two countries involved to operate commercial flights, conveying passengers and cargo between the two countries.
This would therefore allow Ghana’s Airline career access to over 65 countries when it is finally ready and fully operational. Over the years the government of Ghana through the ministry of Aviation has signed several aviation-related deals with countries such as Canada, Rwanda, Seychelles, and Jamaica as the country seeks to open more routes for investment trade and tourism. Irrespective of the news that several airlines Ashanti Airlines are all vying for the position. Several news outlets have hinted that the name selected for the airlines is Ghana Airlines according to engineer Charles Kweku, the Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority. An announcement by the Ministry of Transport should be expected before the end of 2022.
Ghana Airlines as we will come to know aims to begin operations in early 2023. The selected home-based airline has been granted an air career license by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and has entered the final stages of receiving the air operator certificate. Which is the last stage of the process before it becomes fully operational. The new national career is expected to accommodate shots of medium and long-distance routes with fleets of Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the heavy land Canada-8400 aircraft. The airline expects to service its domestic and regional travel needs within Ghana and Africa with a fleet of – 8400 aircraft. Also, impressively a fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners will service its long-distance routes to other continents. This will be made possible due to the provisional order for the purchase of three Boeing Dreamliners which was signed by the Ghanaian government during the 2019 Dubai air show.
The Minister for Aviation Hon. Joseph Kofi Adda after the provisional purchase of the aircraft stated, “there is a growing demand for air travel to and from Ghana and we believe the advanced 7879 Dreamliner gives us an efficient and flexible machine to launch a regional network and eventually serve International destinations in the future”. According to several outlets, the incoming airline carrier signed a deal with Ashanti Airline also in Ghana as its strategic investment partner to help establish the airline after outbidding other tutors such as Egypt Air and Ethiopian Airlines ensuring that the whole operation remains indigenous.
Initial information on the deal suggested that the strategic partner Ashanti Airline will hold 49 shares while the local individuals and corporate bodies get 41 percent with governments left holding 10 percent. Establishing this career has the potential to generate massive financial and economic benefits for Ghana and West Africansub-region as a whole. The creation of countless job opportunities for the locals, increase revenue from tourism, and greater investments in the country. This would go a long way to further improve Ghana’s reputation as the Aviation Hub of the West African sub-region as envisioned by the government and also maximize the huge investments made in airports and other aviation infrastructure.
