A Presidential or Ministerial Task Force against galamsey accounts ultimately to the President. On the other hand, the President is accountable to the people through Parliament for any measures adopted to fight galamsey under a State of Emergency.
Parliament can exact accountability either through specific provisions in an Emergency Act that approves the State of Emergency, or through Article 31(6) when Parliament is asked to extend the State of Emergency.
That is one more reason President Akufo-Addo must declare a State of Emergency under Article 31, in order to not only adopt tougher measures to fight against galamsey but also to unite the nation behind him through Parliament!
Perhaps Ghanaians should join demonstrations to demand that the President takes specific, urgent actions to fight against galamsey. This includes declaring a State of Emergency and launching a full-scale war against people involved in galamsey, as well as demanding the arrest and prosecution of beneficial owners and management officials of mining companies that violate the law, Act 995!
It seems like President Akufo-Addo has failed to successfully fight against galamsey and those behind it. The situation has gotten worse since he promised to put his presidency on the line.
So Akonta mining illegally destroys our forest reserve, illegally takes away our gold and only gets asked to walk away from there? Is it because it is owed by Chairman Wontumi, the NPP Chairman for Ashanti Region?
Our water bodies have become even more polluted and Akonta and their ilk have since destroyed more forest reserves with the impunity of a dead cockroach!
President Akufo-Addo, all hope is not lost, though. Use the remaining tools available to you under Article 31 to redeem your presidency and save Ghana from this existential threat!
Ghanaians look forward to your meeting with the Chiefs and MMDCES tomorrow on the menace of galamsey. Action speaks louder than words.
