Ghana’s most decorated female rapper and the best Ghanaian lady to have so far emerged from the rap fraternity, Eno Barony has cried out on the lack of appreciation from the industry’s stakeholders for women.
The African rap goddess indicated that growing up as a child, she used to listen to Mzbel who was rubbing shoulders with the men during her days, dropping hit songs back-to-back and always leading the trends meanwhile, she has not been celebrated enough, unlike the men she competed with back in the days.
Speaking on Yem FM, on Saturday, August 27, 2022, with the host, Atanga Alex, the rap Queen indicated that she has not seen Mzbel being celebrated on any platform anywhere but her male counterparts are always being accorded that honor. In her opinion, she said Mzbel has been an icon that most female musicians of today looked up to. She indicated that not even the VGMA has ever awarded Mzbel for her contributions to the music industry like some of her male counterparts have.
According to Eno Barony, Mzbel even has more hits songs than most of her male colleagues but they always leave her out of honorary awards.
“I was seeing Mzbel Rock’s shoulders with the men, Mzbel was hitting us songs back to back. But you see I haven’t seen any platform celebrating Mzbel as a legend. But Mzbel has been an icon that most of the girls coming up now have looked up to just like all of us. But I have never seen even VGMA giving her an award before. Mzbel has hit songs than most of the guys who came but most of the guys are celebrated whiles Mzbel has been kicked aside”, she unraveled.
Coming down to gospel, she exclaimed all the guys in this category come nowhere near the ladies. we have seen Diana Hamilton winning the VGMA before and though Joe Mettle has also won it before, Eno in her statement indicated the gospel fraternity is female dominated and this will have warranted some kind of respect but nothing special is being said about that feat.
“Talking about the gospel, female rule there because there are a lot of females doing so well in that category of which the men can’t even rock shoulders with them”.
She claimed that if the female were being appreciated enough while attention was also focused on them, they will have captured the Ghana music industry and ruled it in their way just as the men have ruled for quite a long time now. “Come to think of the late Ebony winning VGMA Artist of The Year, me winning Best Rapper Of The Year, Diana Hamilton winning VGMA Artist Of The Year, it’s evident we can rule the music space”, she added.
She however buttressed the fact that it doesn’t have to be an award always but celebrating the craft of the person or uplifting her talent counts. She expressed that she is personally always of the view that, “you are you before an award is given to you, and an award taking away from you shouldn’t draw you backward”.
She indicated many people loved her talent before she was given the best rapper of the year award and this support is what they all need to boost their confidence. She cited that Angelique Kidjo’s talent was seen by her country of origin, uplifted higher before other African countries also saw the talent in her and supported and now she can win an award in the Grammys every year.
So support is what they are soliciting because if you don’t trust what you have, nobody from anywhere is going to trust it.
