The All Teacher Alliance Ghana has told teachers to on a strike action. These were teachers whose monies were deducted about seven months ago from their Professional Allowance (PA) in November 2021 in the name of giving them a customized TM1 laptop.
The teachers, numbering over hundred thousand from all parts of the country teaching at the Primary and KG levels, have not received their laptops although others in the junior high and senior high levels have gotten theirs.
Speaking to the press yesterday, the General Secretary of the infant teacher union, Albert Dadson Amoah noted that there are many serous issues that are of equal importance to the teacher of which the One Teacher, One Laptop Policy is part aside the agitation for Cost of Living Allowance, COLA for teachers.
“As it stands, primary school teachers are yet to receive their laptops. Going on strike over one issue is insufficient to put legitimate pressure on the government. Primary school teachers need their laptops, from which their CPD allowance had been deducted already for it.” He said.
Mr. Amoah also mentioned that the leaders of the three popular teacher unions at the basic level viz GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH Should cause the government to fulfill his obligations to teachers spanning from the payment of promotion arrears, responsibility allowances among others.
“… the government through GES has failed to honor certain privileges due to teachers. These privileges include promotion, incremental jumps, study leave with or without pay, re-engagement and other hosts of allowances,” he noted.
Additionally, ATAG has cautioned these three giant labour unions in education not to deceive their members after their agitation over 1T1L failed. He said, “We do not think that GNAT, NAGRAT and CCT-GH are teachers to go on strike to save their image after many threats to the government over the TM1 laptop did not yield results.”
