It was an interesting turn of events as Parliament resumed today. Friday’s meeting created fears that there will be more trade of words among Parliamentarians today in Parliament. The Minority under the leadership of Alban Bagbin had voted for the rejection of the 2022 budget. This was possible after the Majority side of the house had walked out over protests regarding the presence of Asiedu Nketia in the public gallery of the House of Parliament.
Today, Tuesday, November 30, 2021, there was no presence of the Minority in the house of Parliament. Only the Majority side were in the chamber with Hon. Joseph Osei Owusu sitting in the chair as Speaker. The sitting Speaker was prompted by Osei Kyei Mensah about the illegality last Friday when 137 MPs voted to reject the budget. The 1st Deputy Speaker then called to check the numbers in Parliament and mentioned that they were 138 with he himself as a member.
He then called for a voice vote where the Majority unanimously rejected the rejection decision of last Friday and approved the 2022 Budget. Many Ghanaians monitoring the proceedings have reacted to the happenings of today. The supporters of the ruling NPP feel that justice has been done while NDC supporters have insisted that the NPP are acting out of ignorance. Some claim that the decision taken today will be overturned when Bagbin returns from Dubai to take his seat.
The coming days will be interesting as Ghanaians await to see how this tense political situation will be solved. Alban Bagbin is currently out of the country and is expected to spend about 2 weeks on some medical examinations. Check out reactions from the official Parliament House Facebook page.
