Since the beginning of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, the agricultural sector has been one of the most successful sectors of government with the aim of alleviating the suffering of the people due to food scarcity and the rising of its prices. As a result, the government has taken significant measures to help alleviate the effects of rising food prices and boost the country’s economy.
Furthermore, among the measures taken by the government is the revival of the old Green Revolution and the Directorate of Food program, in addition to Operation Feed the Nation (OFN).

At the same time, the Nigerian government announced its intention to suspend wheat imports due to its annual loss of $2 billion in wheat trade in addition to failure to meet gross domestic product (GDP). According to Punch on her verified Facebook page, President Buhari unveiled the plan while launching the first-ever rainfed commercial wheat cultivation which took place in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Will the federal government’s plan to end wheat importation boost Nigeria’s economic status?

The plan faces major challenges that include rising food prices related to flour due to the lack of wheat in the country, and then there is a possibility that wheat importers from abroad will lose their jobs. But despite the challenges posed by the plan, the country’s economy will change dramatically as there will be a surplus of $2billion that is loosened every year. As a result, if the government spends $2billion on a sector, there will be a big change.
Furthermore, the program will provide employment opportunities to the community. The main thing to ensure this is that when we look at the past three years, the Nigerian government has announced a similar plan to stop the importation of rice into Nigeria. Following the establishment of the program, people in the country, especially those living in the North, have embraced rice farming. As a result, rice is plentiful in the country and many of the youth have made a fortune by stopping the importation of rice in Nigeria.
Therefore, this has been a major development and a source of pride for Nigeria because of its wheat production plans. But the biggest challenge that needs to be addressed by the Nigerian government is to make sure that the price of wheat does not increase as much as it did on rice at the moment.
