The new path being channeled by the new police administration appears to be both internal and external. From the outside, people who have gone contrary to the laws have been arrested in the shortest possible time and have been made to face the laws accordingly.
The new IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has started a new regime to ensure that the police administration gains respect from the public. One thing that most Ghanaians are worried about is the open secret of some police officers rampantly taking bribes from the public especially drivers. Many have called on the IGP to work on it if he wants to restore the integrity of the police.
But it seems the IGP is already not happy with the practice and has started cautioning police officers involved to desist from it or face his anger. The Director of public affairs at the Ghana Police Service ACP Kwasi Ofori who appeared on the Joy News File monitored by BeaNana indicated that the IGP is worried about the trend and has been working internally to weed out corruption within the sector.
According to him, there is a new wave within the service and officers are beginning to see eye to eye with the IGP that there is the need to stop bribery and corruption within the service once and for all. The IGP is working towards excellence and any officer who is not ready to assist will face the laws accordingly.
This is a huge blow to those police officers who have over the years reduced the name of the Ghana Police Service to bribery and corruption. If the IGP is able to sanitize the service from corruption and bribery the police can as well increase its internal revenue because all the monies going into private pockets will be paid into the official coffers of the administration. ACP Kwasi Ofori who speaks for the IGP and the police also cautioned the public to stop paying a bribe to police officers because both the giver and the take are all guilty.
This should be a caution to the police officers that their boss is in for a serious business and anyone who tries will be dealt with. In order not to incur his anger, officers must simply stay away from corruption and bribery.
