Ghana as a country has had seven vice presidents since 1979. Ghana’s very first vice president was Joseph De-Graft Johnson who was in power under the government of Hilla Limann.
The longest serving vice president in Ghana is Aliu Mahama. He is the only vice president in Ghana to serve a complete two terms in office. He came to power on 7th January, 2001 and left office on 7th January, 2009. The president during that time was John Agyekum Kuffour.
Aliu Mahama was born on 3rd March 1946 in Yendi. He was an engineer and a politician.
He was a board member of several secondary schools in the Northern Region including the Tamale Polytechnic.
He also served as a Board member of the Ghanaian Premier League side Real Tamale United, where he was a founding member.
He was married to Hajia Ramatu Mahama. Their son Farouk Aliu Mahama is currently the Member of Parliament for Yendi constituency and the Board Chair of the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Corporation
Aliu Mahama died at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital on 16th November, 2012. According to reports, he died at the age of 66 from a heart-related condition and complications from a stroke.
However, Ghana’s incumbent vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been in office for more than four years. He is set to finish his second term under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo. He is currently the second longest serving vice president in Ghana pending his end of service in his second term.
