The Electoral Commission of Ghana has requested the Ghana Police Service to immediately investigate the former president John Dramani Mahama for a series of allegations he had leveled against the commission.
In a press conference organised at the EC head office in Accra today to review the 2020 election, which was telecast live on Joynews, Dr. Bossman Asare said the allegations of electoral fraud against the EC were not true. He said the previous elections were so transparent that no one could rig. He said the EC introduced the regional collation system to further enhance the transparency of the process.
According to him, the NDC delegated seasoned lawyers to represent it at all the sixteen regional collation centers and they ensured that the figures coming in from each region were cross-checked and varified before signing the regional collation forms.
He also refuted the allegation that, the EC printed over one million ballot papers for the NPP. While calling on the police to investigate the allegation, Dr. Bossman challenged the former president to produce evidence to support his claim.
On why the police are being called to carry out this role, the deputy EC Chairperson said the allegations when allowed to stay has the potential of tarnishing the image of the Commission and create disaffection between the EC and the stakeholders.
On the allegation of violence associated with the last election, the EC distanced itself from it. According to Dr. Bossman Asare, the EC was not responsible for the security. He said all the chaos that were linked to the elections had nothing to do with the officials of the EC.
He alleged that a local radio station in Techiman announced that people should go to the collation center to protect the NDC candidate or they will cheat him. He said that was where the chaos started from the Techiman South constituency.
Dr. Bossman also said the continual mention of the EC Chairperson whenever Mr. Mahama raised issues were just to blackmail the woman. He said the Commission works as an independent body and no singly individual can be said to represent it unless the commission delegates him or her to do so.
