Parliament is still in session as Parliamentarians sit to debate some issues before going on recess. One of the issues discussed related to the brouhaha over the Sputnik V vaccines. It can be recalled that a few weeks ago, a committee sat to listen to the Health Minister, Agyeman Manu over claims of procurement crises.
At the hearing the Minister made some startling revelations. He revealed that in his desire for quick acquisition of vaccines, he did not “think properly” and took an indecisive action. He called for forgiveness and pledged to do better. However, many Ghanaians felt he had done enough injustice to the people of Ghana.
Another issue of debate was the Health Minister’s action of signing a contract without seeking Cabinet and Parliamentary approval. On the floor of Parliament tonight, Friday, August 6, 2021, Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase made huge allegations against the Minister and moved the motion for him to be removed. His counterpart, Osei Kyei Mensah however rose to defend his own. He maintained that the Minister has announced that he made one or two mistakes and could be forgiven.
Osei Kyei Mensah also added that the Committee did not bring anything concrete to bring the Health Minister down. He explained that everything was done for the benefit of Ghanaians. In the midst of jeers from the opposition NDC MPs, Osei Kyei Mensah maintained that Muntaka had no right to call for the removal of the Health Minister. In a loud rebuttal, he said, we cannot entertain that motion.
