Police must quickly investigate the shameful and stinking vote-buying elections that were witnessed at the just-ended New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) primaries in the country, businessmen and founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike has said.
On Saturday, June 20, 2020, the NPP organised its nationwide primaries to elect Parliamentary Candidates to contest fas Members of Parliament (MPs) during the general election in December
Days before the contest, there were reports some aspirants were bribing delegates to vote for them in the elections but the leadership of the party denied the allegation daring those making such claims to back it with evident
However, a day after the polls when some aspirants realized they had been defeated, they went round constituencies chasing delegates to collect back monies or gifts.
According to some of these aspirants, the agreement was that the delegates who received their money vote for them but since they didn’t win, they had to take back their monies because the delegates failed to fulfill their part of the bargain.
This practice of many of the NPP aspirants has sparked heated arguments both on social media and the traditional media as to why such ‘stinking’ practices would happen in the 21st century.
But Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike speaking on Angel Fm’s morning show in Kumasi described the practice as “stinking and shameful” and called for the police to investigate.
“Police must investigate the corrupt practices that went on during the NPP primaries. Inducement; collect money and vote for me. As someone who wishes to be a Member of Parliament and want to be called Honourable, it is very shameful”, he told Kwame Tanko on the show.
Mr. Odike challen observed that that the NPP didn’t go for elections rather “they went for auctions. The highest bidder; that is what they worked for”, adding that that the NPP has not learnt their lessons.
“Today when you look into how the NPP’s are wasting money in their internal politics, it is a clear indication that the party did not come to help Ghana. They work for individual interest”, he added
