Deputy Chief of Staff and Political Assistant to the President, Francis Asenso-Boakye has said Nana Akufo Addo has personally given him his blessings to run in the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming Parliamentary Primaries on Saturday, June 20, 2020.
He would be facing off with incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and Government’s Spokesman on Finance, Daniel Okyem Aboagye in what promises to be a keen contest for who becomes the ruling party’s candidate for the 2020 Parliamentary Elections in the Bantama Constituency.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasi-based Angel FM monitored by MyNewsGh on Monday morning, Francis Asenso-Boakye said, “I would not be here campaigning to become a candidate if the president has not given me his blessings; he has personally expressed his confidence in me and told me what a good MP I would become if I win this contest”.
This is the third time that Asenso Boakye would be attempting to become Parliamentary Candidate for the NPP in the Bantama Constituency, after being persuaded on two occasions in 2008 and 2012 to step down and make way for Cecilia Dapaah and Henry Kwabena Kokofu respectively.
In his third time bid, many have said his aggressive campaign to unseat the incumbent MP, first timer Daniel Okyem Aboagye is an indication of his lack of confidence in the Akufo-Addo administration to win a second term at the presidency and so would want to cement his political presence with a parliamentary position.
But Asenso-Boakye maintains his penchant for becoming the Member of Parliament for Bantama is fueled by his deep concern for the development of the area, where he was “born and bred”.
“I will not stop working for Nana Addo; I will remain a Deputy Chief of Staff till the end of this tenure. If we win the 2020 elections, the President would make fresh appointments but he also believes that I can become an MP. I have served him diligently for many years and he has a lot of confidence in me”.
Asenso-Boakye’s spirited campaign for the candidacy in Bantama, marked by a seeming popularity over the incumbent, puts him ahead in the contest, barring any shocker from the delegates, Mynewsgh.com’s independent checks have indicated.
Delegates and general electorate have openly clamoured for his coming as they say Okyem Aboagye has done very little to show for his tenure as MP of one of the most loyal constituencies of the ruling party, as compared to what Asenso-Boakye has done even without having their mandate.
