Technology has caused a paradigm shift in the showbiz industry and this has led to the collapse of traditional means of marketing music through the sale of cassette and Compact Disk (CD).
However, most of the veteran Ghanaian musicians are still grappling with the introduction of new digital song marketing platforms where making money from your music depends on the number of streams and views.
‘Maranatha’ hitmaker and award-winning gospel artiste, Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong known in showbiz as Great Ampong has downplayed the role of digital marketing platforms for his songs due to the paltry amount of money he receives.
Speaking to Cape Coast’s finest radio presenter, Amansan Krakye on GBC Radio Central monitored by MyNews, Great Ampong said he doesn’t take digital marketing seriously because he was getting $400 in three months on YouTube and that made him lose interest.
He opined “I wasn’t seeing any big money coming from my YouTube views that’s why I lost interest in it. I had somebody who was managing my YouTube page for me but after a long while when I inquired I was just making peanuts.
“So I felt it was not worth it after so much talk about how YouTube is making people rich and all that buzz. You can’t depend on such a small amount of money to sustain you because making $400 in three months is woefully inadequate.
“However, some people think that you have to do it as a norm but I don’t know whether other platforms are helping artistes to make more money. As for me I was putting my music videos on YouTube and I was discouraged since I wasn’t making huge sums of money”.
