Philanthropist and award winning gospel artiste, Philipa Baafi has declared that there is nowhere in the Bible that forbids Christians from expressing their political opinion.
A superintendent minister of the Methodist Church recently proposed the postponement of the 2020 general election as the country strives to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
Philipa Baafi in an exclusive interview with Amansan Krakye on Cape Coast-based GBC Radio Central monitored by MyNewsGh, was quizzed about her opinion on Christians making political statements.
She remarked “There is no chapter or verse in the Bible that forbid Christians from expressing their political opinions. When we say that God makes Kings it means that from the beginning leadership is something that can be found in the Bible.
“So we’re advised to accord the necessary respect to our leaders. It was God who made Saul a King so leadership is very important. If you leave in a country and you vote during elections, men of God also vote so why will anyone say that they can’t express their political views.
“Something that we all live in and affects us why would you say because someone is a Pastor or because I’m a gospel musician so I shouldn’t express my political opinion. We’re citizens therefore when discussions come up about things which are inimical to us why should I keep silent.
“You have a rightful say so things like that you can’t shut up. It doesn’t mean that we’re actively engaged in politics. So if a man of God says Akufo-Addo should be given another term because of coronavirus without going through elections that is his opinion we can’t judge him.
“So far as the man of God votes and any decision taken by government will go a long to affect him, he has the right to express his opinion because at the end of the day when we talk about citizens of Ghana, he is also included”.
