US President Donald Trump has accused the World Health Organization (WHO) of misleading government’s around the globe to delay imposing life-saving restrictions in the wake of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
President Trump in a letter to the Director General of the WHO said “Your political gamesmanship on this issue was deadly, as other governments, relying on your comments, delayed imposing life-saving restrictions on travel to and from China”.
Donald Trump has consistently criticized the WHO over it’s information management and handling of the pandemic. He stated that the organisation has worked in concert with China to cover up significant information about the virus when it broke out in Wuhan.
Following a decision to impose a temporary freeze on US funding support to the WHO, Mr Trump in the letter to Director General of WHO Tedros Adhanom threatened to permanently freeze US funding support if it does not demonstrate independence from China and set itself on a path of substantive improvement in the next 30 days.
The US has 1.5 million coronavirus cases and nearly 92,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Russia comes second with nearly 300,000 confirmed cases.
