Former Mayor of Kumasi and close crony of former President John Mahama has also declared his ambition to contest the upcoming flagbearership contest of the National Democratic Congress which analysts project Mahama to win.
But Kojo Bonsu, together with Joshua Akamba-also a Mahama crony- was the brain behind numerous “Unity Walks” across Ghana, which many, including NDC flagbearership aspirant Alba Bagbin, have said was cooked to ostensibly market John Mahama ahead of the contest, as MyNewsGh.com reported in the past.
The ‘Unity Walk,’ which was aimed at restoring hope to members of the NDC across the country was hijacked by John Mahama to keep his name and face alive among NDC members.
A section of the party members, who did not take part in the walk accused Mr Mahama of secretly hiding behind the organizers (Kojo Bonsu at al) of the event to enhance his chances of leading the NDC in 2020.
Kojo Bonsu debunks reports
Kojo Bonsu, however flatly debunked reports that Mr Mahama was the brain behind the unity walk ostensibly to help him (Mahama) to be elected as the NDC flagbearer for the 2020 polls.
“This unity walk is very necessary, as it is intended to help restore unity and hope among our party members, who from all indications are very dull following the 2016 electoral defeat which is normal in politics,” he said.
Kojo Bonsu added “we did not organize the walk in Tamale to help Mr Mahama or anybody in the NDC to lead our great party as flagbearer during the upcoming 2020 elections and that is the gospel truth” he had said.
Kojo Bonsu 2020 and Rawlings
Insiders consider the declaration by Kojo Bonsu a betrayal of a sort, as days ago, Mr Kojo Bonsu had been in discussion with the Mahama team about the role he would play in the 2020 campaign for Mr Mahama following after the NDC Unity Walks.
An insider has told MyNewsGH.com that following the refusal of former National Development Planning Commission boss Kwesi Botchwey to run against Mr Mahama on the blessing of support of the NDC; and a failure of a Dufuor 2020 flyer to catch attention of NDC delegates, the Rawlingses might have settled on Kojo Bonsu as a late candidate for the NDC internal contest.
Others have said Kojo Bonsu intends to make a strong case in the contest, hoping to force Mr Mahama to pick him as a partner for the 2020 contest against the NPP.
What all insiders agree on is that Kojo Bonsu was a Mahama-insider who has jumped ship.
