A Facebook user who engineered reports that government had awarded a $98 million contract to a Chinese firm to take over the marking of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts has rendered an unqualified apology to the Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
By name Sheikh Osumanu Abubakar Odysseus in a post on his Facebook wall sighted MyNewsGh.com he “My attention has been drawn to the fact that, the post I made indicating that BECE marking has been ceded to Chinese firm is coming from an incredible site”.
“I say sorry to Dr. Mettew Opoku Prempeh, whose name I cried in my post [and] I have pulled down my post”, Sheikh Osumanu Abubakar Odysseus added.
The Education Ministry earlier asked the public to disregard reports purporting that it contracted a Chinese firm to mark BECE scripts for a sum of 98 million dollars.
In a statement, Head of the Public Relations Unit at the Ministry, Vincent Ekow Assafuah said the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) remains in charge of marking examinations through its recruits and contract teachers for that purpose.
The statement said it is surprising that although the said story referred to a news conference held at the Jubilee House addressed by the Vice President, none of the major media houses was present to publish or broadcast the story.
It urged the public to ignore such concocted stories and treat it with the contempt it deserves.
