Wisdom Mensah Woyome, a ranking member of Ghana’s Parliament’s Sports Committee, is perplexed as to why the bonus payments to athletes who excelled at the 2023 African Games have been postponed.
The South Tongu Constituency Member of Parliament weighed in on the ongoing dispute between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and disgruntled athletes regarding the unfulfilled arrangement.
Athletes from Ghana who won medals in the multi-sport competition at the 13th African Games, which took place in Ghana for the first time, have not yet received their financial packages, which include $3000 for gold medal winners, nearly two months after the competition ended.
“I think this (payment of bonuses) shouldn’t delay because it will be a disservice because this is an area that we’ve all along wanted to motivate and get many more talented people to really veer into.”
“So we think that once it was part of the package promised them, they should be able to get that across to them. I don’t know and understand why we should be delaying in getting them all these (payments)” he said in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports.
Ghana won a record 69 medals at the 2023 African Games with 19 being gold.
