Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, will be honored with a new postage stamp that Ghana Post plans to introduce.
The Asantehene Commemorative Stamp, created in collaboration with Manhyia Palace and with the support of the Ministry of Communication, commemorates the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo’s ascension to the Golden Stool.
Speaking to the media, Ghana Post’s Managing Director, Bice Osei Kuffour, stated that the stamp represents Ghana’s profound respect and admiration for the Asante Kingdom and its esteemed leader, transcending its use as a postage device.
Numerous Ghanaians have benefited from Otumfuo’s visionary initiatives, such as the Otumfuo Charity Foundation and the Otumfuo Education Fund. His leadership has catalysed an era of remarkable progress and development for the Asante Kingdom, illuminating a path of hope and inspiration for all,” he explained.
“This commemorative stamp embodies our collective national pride and identity. It was painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans under the guidance of Ghana Post’s stamp advisory committee.” It serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between our deeply held traditional values and our aspirations for the future,” Mr. Osei Kuffour continued.
Among other things, the Asantehene Commemorative Stamp is beneficial for culture and education.
Through the dissemination of historical information and imagery, these stamps contribute to the enrichment of Ghana’s educational curriculum and promote cultural awareness and appreciation.
It offers comprehension of the nation’s history, traditions, and culture. It is an invaluable resource because it ensures that the legacy of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Asante Kingdom is preserved and passed on to future generations.
The Ghana Post MD hopes that this inspires pride and a deeper appreciation for Ghana’s culture.
Our country’s bright future is built on the solid foundation of our rich cultural legacy. Mr. Osei Kuffour said, “Let this stamp serve as a reminder that our roots are the foundation upon which our future is built, a monument to the unwavering spirit of our forefathers, and a symbol of our resilience.”
The Minister of Communications and Digitalizations, Mr. Alexander Afful, for his part, underlined how the stamp reflects Ghana’s pride and identity as a nation.
“This stamp bridges our traditional values with modern aspirations, reminding us that our rich cultural heritage is fundamental to the nation’s future,” he stated.
He also praised Ghana Post for its commitment to cultural preservation and noted that the stamp would provide educational value, offering insights into the nation’s history, culture, and traditions.
Dignitaries from the royal family, public servants, business executives, local authorities, and diaspora residents are expected to attend.
The Minister for Communications and Digitalisation will deliver the keynote address at what is expected to be a grand event.
The magnificent Manhyia Palace will host the official launch of the Asantehene Commemorative Stamp on May 4, 2024. The event will feature cultural performances, speeches, a stamp unveiling ceremony, and an exhibition of historical artifacts.
The unveiling of Manhyia Palace will be the centerpiece of this ambitious project’s launch, which will be a multifaceted celebration. The United Kingdom is scheduled to host its own launch at a later date, so the celebrations will go beyond Ghana’s boundaries. This will confirm the stamp’s global reach and Ghana’s position as a steward of cultural diversity.
Complementing these grand events, an essay writing competition will be announced for students aged 9 to 15, challenging young minds to reflect on Otumfuo’s enduring impact and his role as a catalyst for positive change.
This visionary commemorative stamp initiative, spearheaded by Ghana Post in collaboration with esteemed partners such as GCB Bank, Ghana Gas, and GOIL, transcends mere philatelic interests. As the world’s gaze turns towards Ghana, this stamp will serve as a powerful reminder of the nation’s resilience, its unwavering commitment to preserving its cultural identity, and its readiness to embrace the future while honouring the lessons of the past.
