Mathias Pogba, the older brother of France and Juventus player Paul Pogba, was freed from prison on Friday, according to his attorney.
An ex-footballer who was charged with extortion in an organized gang, Mathias was one of five people detained in September.
The guys allegedly demanded €13 million ($14 million) from the World Cup winner for protection services provided between March and July 2022. Paul Pogba denounced these extortion efforts to the prosecutor’s office in Turin, and police responded.
Following a plea made by his attorney Yassine Bouzrou on December 15, according to Le Parisien, Mathias Pogba has finally been freed and put under court monitoring after being imprisoned for three months.
Mathias was released from the Villepinte detention facility in Seine-Saint-Denis, northern Paris, on Friday morning after the request was granted by the investigating judges in charge of the case.
In addition to being forbidden from leaving France or posting on social media, Mathias Pogba will not be permitted to communicate with anyone connected to the case, his mother or brother Paul.
When Matthias Pogba posted now-famous videos on social media in multiple languages, threatening to disclose explosive revelations about Paul Pogba, the disagreement between the brothers became public.
Mathias claimed that his brother had hired a Marabout, a type of witch doctor from West Africa, to cast a curse on Kylian Mbappe of France so that the Paris Saint-Germain star would suffer injury.
Then, reports claimed that Pogba had admitted to using the Marabout, but merely to prevent injuries. If genuine, this failed because the midfielder’s knee ailment prevented him from joining Les Bleus in Qatar in 2022 when he returned to Juventus from Manchester United this summer.
As a result of Pogba’s absence, Didier Deschamps’ team advanced to the final, where Mbappe scored a hat-trick, but France lost to Argentina 4-2 on penalties. Pogba frequently conveyed positive thoughts to his coworkers in Qatar and was spotted watching the final at Lusail Stadium.
Due to recent remarks made by Juventus manager Max Allegri, it is unclear when he will be able to play again for the team.
“Paul still hasn’t been consistent in training, so I cannot say when he’ll be back,” Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.
This is the truth and it’s important to say that, otherwise every day we’ll get these questions on how Pogba’s recovery is going. He hasn’t yet started running in training.” Read more
