The University Teachers’ Association of Ghana(UTAG) has indefinitely suspended its strike action after reaching an agreement with the government.
UTAG and three labour unions went on strike on Monday, October 17, 2022, to compel the government to settle an outstanding online teaching support allowance(OTSA) and non-payroll allowances.
Meanwhile, the unions have asked the government to settle the payment of the book and research allowance for 2022 and implement the agreement reached in March on the implementation of market premium or review the Single Spine Salary Structure in 2023.
The president of UTAG, Professor Solomon Nunoo, said on the Asaase Breakfast Show that they reached an agreement with the government and will return to work, but it is an indefinite suspension.
“An agreement has been reached, and we will naturally return to work. It is an indefinite suspension of our industrial action.”
They also expect the government to make the first payment as a part of their salary agreed upon this month.
“We believe that it is important that there is harmony on the campuses, and it is for this reason that we should be seen in the offices very soon to serve our students in the various institutions,” he added.
Professor Solomon Nunoo continued to say that there is hardship in the country, and the government has admitted it was not fair to introduce the conditions of service without first engaging them.
It can be recalled that UTAG began their strike on Monday, October 17, 2022, to compel the government to improve conditions of service. The unions continued with their strike despite the intervention of the National Labour Commission(NLC).
