Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a candidate for flagbearer, has criticized the unfair coverage of who will lead the party in the next general elections.
He said that the media has made the race for flagbearer look like a two-man show between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kojo Kyeremanteng.
Mr. Agyapong said that the race is about more than just the two big names, and that there are other good candidates like himself running.
In an interview with Kweku Sintim Misa (KSM), Agyapong said that it was up to the media to ask each candidate to talk about their policy plans and other ideas for running the country.
“The press has tried to make this look like a two-horse race, which it is by default,” he said before explaining why Minister of Trade and Industry Alan Kyerematen and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia are seen as the frontrunners.
“Just because the Vice President is the second most powerful person in the country and was chosen by the president doesn’t mean he is better than any of us.

“Of course, Alan K. has been second in the polls, which means he has been second in the last three presidential primaries. So, you have two default candidates, one political and one electoral, who are seen as the frontrunners, but that doesn’t matter to me at all.
He went on to say, “Ghanaians are going through what they are going through, and these two are currently a part of the system.” If there is anything they can do to help Ghanaians, they can do it now, not in 2024.”
Agyapong wants to take over as leader of the NPP from Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo before the 2024 elections.
