The tremor which happened yesterday, December 12, 2022, at the magnitude of 4.2 has been described by officials at the Ghana Geological Survey Authority as a small type of earthquake.
According to seismologists, what was recorded yesterday is a precursor or foreshock of more tremors to come. However, none have been able to predict when to expect the next tremor which will happen.
In an interview with Quartz Africa, Dr Palina Amponsah has announced that, ‘’Ghana is the most seismically active country in West Africa and Accra is dotted with so many small fault lines and the geology is not uniform’’.
Meanwhile, many people in the nation’s capital have expressed fear of a higher frequency of earthquakes which is to come as many fear losing their properties, business, and lives, even though the nation is far from experiencing some of the major earthquakes recorded in the world.
As the tremor happened within the early hours of the day, many people in the nation’s capital took to their social media to ask if they were the only people experiencing a shake. Others run out of the rooms and offices to be sure that the world has not come to an end.
Reports about the earth tremor however calmed the nerves of most people who were in oblivion of what they had experienced in brief seconds.
Between 2018 and 2020, the city has recorded eight earth tremors, most with a magnitude less than 4.
