When Dwyane Wade’s daughter Zaya publicly came out as transgender in 2019 at age 12, it marked the first step in a new phase of her life – one that she had been fighting to reach since the tender age of three, when she realized for the first time that she was trans.
Every since Zaya came out to her family – and then to the world – she has had her father’s fully-fledged support. Not only did he lovingly accept his daughter’s sexual identify, but he – along with his wife, Zaya’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union – set out on a journey to learn as much as he could about the LGBTQ+ community.
He and Gabrielle, 50, have continuously advocated for Zaya, now 15, online and in interviews – and the couple has worked hard to protect her from the nasty trolls, cruel comments, and negative backlash as a result of going public with her gender identity.
