Nana Akufo-Addo, on Sunday evening, entered the homes of Ghanaians uninvited with his famous greeting, “fellow Ghanaians”, to address the nation on the economy.
For the past few months, we have seen the cedi ridiculously depreciate against the dollar, coupled with an unreasonable high price of goods in the market.
Due to the woes of the economy and legit complaints by the citizens, it was only fair for the president to address the nation on these economic issues. However, the President’s speech was a far-fetched cliche. Most Ghanaians before the speech knew what to expect; play the blame game. Blame everything but their unnecessary spending of the public purse.
In his series of posts on Twitter, he tweeted the statement, “If you talk down your money, it will go down. If you allow some unidentifiable person to talk down your money, it will go down.” Social media users gave their interpretation of this statement. Most users interpreted his statement as saying words of affirmation to the cedi. Connoting if one says words of encouragement to the cedi, it will rise.
There were some hilarious tweets and replies about the statement on Twitter. Below are some of the tweets,
“Baba said the tongue is powerful y’all. Begin to speak words of encouragement to that 20 nairas inside your wallet right now.”
“I speak life into the naira. The naira is valuable. The naira is in high demand. The world loves the naira. The cedi is trash. Throw your Cedis away.”
“It’s Monday morning. Time to give this 50 ghana fans make e shock turn 5 billion.”
The president also tweeted another cause of the depreciation of the Ghana currency. In his tweet, he mentioned an anonymous 2-minute audio message circulated on WhatsApp, which predicted a so-called haircut on Government bonds. The audio, which the president subtly implied was fake, sent so many people into banks and forex bureaus to dump their cedis and had it depreciated further.
