Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Overlord of the Asante state has been one of the vocal speakers against galamsey. In a number of commentary, Otumfuo has insisted that there are many chiefs and government officials involved in galamsey and noted that the fight against galamsey isn’t yielding fruits because of the involvement of certain powerful people in galamsey.
“It is annoying and disgusting. Your water is being destroyed and yet you say nothing. For the government we have a lot to contend with them. The government knows it is bad.” Otumfuo said to his Asanteman Council. Earlier in another meeting with the United States ambassador to Ghana, the Asantehene said that even after Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line, not much has been achieved.
Lawyer Maurice Ampaw on Mmra Ne Abrabo Mu Nsem was of the view that though the Asantehene made some valid points about galamsey, there were other points that he disagreed with. Lawyer Ampaw said that the Asantehene cannot blame the government for the failed fight in galamsey. He noted that this isn’t the time for the blame game and was of the view that the government is doing everything possible to end galamsey.
Maurice Ampaw explained that indeed river bodies are being destroyed but said this doesn’t mean that Otumfuo should blame the Akufo-Addo led government for the mess that is going on. He called for all to join hands so that the President stops illegal mining. Interestingly, Maurice Ampaw added that there is no proof that his boss Wontumi is involved in galamsey as some people have said.
This comment of Maurice Ampaw will be seen by many hypocritical because there is no denying fact that there are many party big wigs involved in galamsey. Many feel the president might even know some of those involved and yet he has looked on while those under him have destroyed Ghana’s waters.
