Popular writer for the ruling NPP, PK Sarpong has proposes we should all welcome a proposition from OccupyGhana which seeks to criminalize the selling of land for galamsey.
“I cannot help but admire this brilliant suggestion from OccupyGhana in our continued efforts to fight illegal mining activities.
OccupyGhana, in its weekly letter of reminders to His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has made a proposal that must meet the happy agreement of Mr. President and all well-meaning citizens of Ghana who support the fight against galamsey.” P.K Sarpong remarked.
According to him, OccupyGhana posits that all lands belong to individuals and these lands are released to these galamseyers by their respective owners without which these mining activities couldn’t have been possible.
OccupyGhana proposes a legislation which would criminalize all those who release their lands to galamseyers to ply their trade. This is a brilliant idea which, if embraced, would mark the watershed upon which we can successfully root out illegal mining.
Lands are owned by individuals. Lands given for small scale mining activities are not given by individuals but the state. However, lands given to these illegal miners do not come from the state but individual owners.
It, therefore, makes sense that if we are to be successful in this fight, we must arrest and prosecute those who sell or hand out these lands to the galamseyers.
Anyone whose land is found to have been used or being used for galamsey should be picked up and prosecuted. They must also be held accountable for the mess going on in our forests and water bodies.
People cannot just go to others’ lands and start mining without their knowledge. Without the consent of land owners, no galamseyer can embark on such devastating sprees.
Arresting and prosecuting these land owners would be akin to cutting the head of a snake turning the rest of the body into a mere belt.
“Once again, we have to commend OccupyGhana for bringing forth this wonderful yet practical proposition in our overwhelming desire to stop people destroying our lands and water bodies for us.” PK Sarpong added.
