Ghana’s President Akufo-Addo today, Monday, October 10, 2022 made a presentation to the Executive Board of UNESCO. The President is in France for a 6-day working visit. The assembly was the 215 session of the Executive Board of UNESCO. According to the president education is very vital and cannot be toiled with in any part of the world.

He however stated that because of the turbulent nature of some parts of the world it looks like education has been sidelined and more emphasis placed on the purchase of military equipment to fight wars. He noted that just when the world was catching her breath after Covid-19, Russia attacked Ukraine without provocation from the latter. Akufo-Addo explained that this war of Putin has exposed the whole world and brought economic hardships.

He mentioned that the economies of Africa have been destroyed by Putin’s war on Ukraine. “We are feeling this war directly in our lives in Africa. Our bullet, our bomb, our shell that hits a target in Ukraine hits our pockets and our economies in Africa” Akufo-Addo said. According to Akufo-Addo, Putin’s war has affected education as more nations that gave education aid are now focusing on arms and strengthening their militaries. He called for peace so that education in Africa and other parts of the world will receive aid.

The NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo have cited Covid-19 the Ukraine Russian war as the external factors that have damaged the Ghanaian economy. Even when it comes to internal factors, the government still chose to blame the erstwhile Mahama government for leaving the economy in a wrecked state, even 6 clear years after they came to office.

Since Putin invaded Ukraine on February 24, the world has watched as lives and properties have been lost. Whereas NATO has shown support for Ukraine and provided her with weapons, Belarus and other countries in the East have stood with Russia. There is no sight of the war coming to an end. Akufo-Addo called on world leaders divert some of their attention to education in Africa. He noted that this was key to transforming the continent.
