Earlier this week, President Akufo-Addo met with the National House of Chiefs as well as MMDCEs to engage on how to deal with galamsey. Illegal mining has become a major threat to the country and despite the government claiming that they are fighting the illegality, not much has been seen in this fight as galamsey rather keeps winning and destroying Ghana’s water resources.
On Good Morning Ghana today, Friday, October 7, 2022, Sammy Gyamfi was engaged by Randy Abbey on the NDC press conference yesterday on the fight against galamsey. The NDC had stated that the president isn’t committed to ending illegal mining. They explained that the president has received so much evidence to bring certain kingpins to justice and yet has looked on.
Richard Ahiagbah felt this was a lie and mentioned that the NDC have turned the minds of galamseyers not to vote for the NPP. He cited a report in 2017 which mentioned that opposition parties usually use galamsey as a campaign message. Richard conveniently mentioned that the report in 2017 confirmed what happened in the 2020 elections.
Randy Abbey however felt that a 2017 report pointed hands at previous elections and not only the 2020 elections. According to Randy it means the 2016, 2012 and 2008 elections could have been factored in. He mentioned that it could be the case that when the NPP were in opposition they also used galamsey as a propaganda message. Richard felt offended and questioned why Randy was distracting his submissions.
“Sammy said a whole lot of things that cannot be substantiated. I am not the government. I am speaking for the party. You didn’t engage Sammy like the way you are distracting me. Today I will not agree with you. Stop defending the NDC. The NDC don’t have answers to end galamsey. All they know is propaganda.” Richard Ahiagbah said.
Questions have been raised as to whether the current government has the political will to end galamsey. In the wake of evidence, the president is still bent on consulting chiefs and MMDCEs. Many have said that the president is surrounded by many people involved in galamsey and thus hypocritical for Akufo-Addo to pretend not to know those involved in the illegality.
