Over the past few months there have been so much brouhaha over SIM card registration. Many had complained about the cumbersome nature of the registration process because it required one to have a Ghana card before the SIM registration process could kick start. In July, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization told Ghanaians that she was giving them up till September 30 to register or get blocked.

However, even before that those who had failed to register by August 31 had to face some punitive actions. Interestingly, even those who had registered claimed they also faced the punishments. Sam George, MP for Ningo Prampram started collecting data regarding a class action against the National Communications Authority for taking action in blocking sims.

Well, the vocal MP has finally filed a suit at the High Court against Attorney General and the National Communications Authority. The MP alongside 10 other respondents are seeking an injunction against the NCA in imposing punitive action against any unregistered sim. According to the class suit this should prevent the NCA from blocking, deactivating, restricting any Sim card in terms of network usage until the case is heard.

The court is expected to be moved on October 6 and this means that the September 30 deadline might fail again. The suit is calling on the court to limit the actions of the NCA and prevent any more punitive action against Sims that are yet to be registered. Sam George like A-Plus has been raising questions as to why the NCA is blocking some Ghanaians who are yet to still receive their SIM cards.

Sam George explains that the National Identification Authority is not under any timeline to register people on their database and so it was wrong for the Communications Authority or Ministry to give them timelines. As the state attorney, Godfred Dame will have to defend the government on why they have imposed punitive actions on some numbers through no fault of theirs in registering. This should be a big relief to those who are yet to get their Ghana cards.
