The ruler of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will not be present at the upcoming funeral for Queen Elizabeth II.
The Manhyia Palace has issued an official statement confirming the news. This announcement comes only days after Asantehene received an invitation from the new British monarch, King Charles III, to attend the burial of his mother.
The Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom sent Otumfuo an invitation. The Queen’s Lying-In-State, the King’s Reception, the State Funeral Services, and the Foreign Secretary’s Reception are all events to which Otumfuo has been invited, together with his wife, Lady Julia Osei Tutu.
Although he was invited, the Asantehene cannot attend the burial. This is what Manhyia said in a message that was widely disseminated online: “Unfortunately, His Royal Majesty Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cannot go to London to participate in the State Funeral for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
According to a letter dated September 15, 2022 with the subject RE: 211/2022 and seen by Opemsuo 104.7 FM, His Majesty Otumfuo Asantehene would not be present at the celebrations commemorating the State Funeral “.
There has been no mention of why the Asantehene cannot attend the burial. Some people on social media are already expressing amazement at the news.
