The world is still mourning the death of UK’s longest serving monarch. Queen Elizabeth passed away last week and the Royal Family in the United Kingdom have been receiving commiserating wishes from world leaders across the world. Ghana has fond memories of the late Queen and will remember her two special visits to the country.
Yesterday, The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion held a thanksgiving service for the Queen at the Cathedral of Advent, Abuja. The event was attended by a number of high dignitaries in the country.
Today, Friday, September 16, 2022, The Internal Province of Ghana (Anglican Communion) in collaboration with the British High Commission also held a Thanksgiving Service for the late Queen at the Cathedral Church of the Most Holy Trinity. The Service saw some dignitaries like Vice President Bawumia, British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson as well as Okudzeto Ablakwa in attendance.
Many Ghanaians have questioned if a service was necessary in Ghana. Interestingly, the nation has issues that teething problems that haven’t been addressed and yet the death of a Queen is what interests the country. It can be recalled that same happened when a memorial service was held in Ghana for George Floyd when he died in the United States.
Well, today’s thanksgiving service for the late Queen saw a colorful display of both traditional and western culture. One interesting photo that caught the attention of many is a huge black of the United Kingdom. The flag had a relatively small Ghanaian flag inserted into it. This flag has raised questions from many Ghanaians as to the rationale of this flag.
The questions demand whether Ghana is still under the British. Some question why the flag of Ghana is small while the UK one is large. Some see this as degrading and not worth the hype. Yesterday, an invitation to the funeral of the late Queen was sent to Otumfuo Osei Tutu and this raised an argument as to why he was the traditional leader invited. Some read the invite as another form of colonialism. Check out some of the reactions to the flag.
