News broke today that Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the Overlord of the Asantes has received a special invitation to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth. The longest serving British monarch and second longest reigning ruler in the world passed away last Thursday and the world has been mourning. For Ghana, the late Queen shared fond memories with the country as she visited the country twice.
After the invitation was dropped many took to social media to react to the piece of news. Many tried to play the tribal card by saying that the invitation of the Asante overlord showed that he was the most powerful in the country. This turned into a banter on social media as Ghanaians debated about why only the Asantehene was the only local ruler to be invited from Ghana.
Well, on Good Evening Ghana, Paul has responded to the invitation and called on Ghanaians to stop fighting each other on social media. According to Paul, he sees this invitation as a form of colonialism and questioned why a letter will come from King Charles and Ghanaians are excited. He noted that it is petty for Ghanaians to be happy and challenge each other on this issue.
Paul explained that there are big kings and small kings but this doesn’t mean one is important than the other. He called on Ghanaians to stop the debate because there was nothing to celebrate. Paul called for unity to ensure development in the country instead of petty debates about trivial issues.
“I think it was unnecessary for people to say some king was invited and someone wasn’t. One Ghanaian king represents all Ghanaian kings. I think so. The comparisons are not necessary. This is petty on the part of some Ghanaians” Paul said
Indeed, the power of Otumfuo has been debated by many in the country. After the latest Kumasi Traditional Council temporary ban on Oyerepa and Odike over certain comments, tempers flared as to the why the council can make such a ruling. Many questioned the power of the Asantehene to ban people. This debate was dying till this latest invitation and this has caused many to question how powerful the king is.
