The first round of the UEFA Champions League group fixtures concluded on Wednesday – and the quest for the Team of the Week based on players’ performances, here is it according to the highest-scored statistics.
Goalkeeper
Andre Onana (Inter Milan)
Very Impressive in the post but were swayed away by Bayern Munich whose attackers were fierce, no goalkeeper made headlines in the competition than the Cameroonian international.
With 10 saves 5 smarts stops, he was rated above every other stopper this week.
Defenders
Abakar Sylla (Brugge)
Scored the only goal for his team and was able to defend it to the end against Bayer Leverkusen – that was a very promising defensive performance from the 19-year-old Ivorian star.
Joao Cancelo (Man. City)
Great vision from the defence perspective, Cancelo is every manager’s dream player – two assists and balanced defensive plays, there is not much to expect from him again as he made his first feature in the team of the week.
Dino Peric (Dinamo Zagreb)
Chelsea couldn’t equalise- come down to one man, the 28-year-old Croatian international whose combative defensive style prevented that from happening- 9 clearances, 5 blocked shots, 2 interceptions, did work as they eye their first group progress in 8 campaigns.
Alejandro Grimaldo (Benfica)
Involved in all club’s goals scored against Maccabi Haifa [a goal and an assist], Grimaldo exhibited good attacking skills that can be counted upon at the expense of strikers- a very solid performance from the left-back.
Midfielders
Andre Zambo Anguissa and Piotr Zielinski (Napoli)
Inseparable, the duo were the pillars of Napoli’s midfield as they defeated Liverpool from home on a 4-1 score-line – contributing joint goals of 3. Zielinski with a brace and an assist to Anguissa.
Mohammed Kudus (Ajax)
Emerged man of the match against Rangers, although played out of his usual position, the Ghanaian midfielder was highly praised for his satiable performance – a goal and an assist to his name, enough to include him in the team of the week.
Forwards
Erling Haaland (Man. City)
With 10 goals in 6 games in the Premier League, Haaland can’t simply stop scoring as he was on the score-sheet once again against Sevilla in their 4-0 victory. A dream attacker of every manager.
Kylian Mbappe (PSG)
Though wasted a lot of scoring opportunities, the Frenchman can be overlooked, especially his two goals that got his side an edge over Juventus and the most fouled player (5).
Robert Lewandowski (Barcelona)
First hat-trick in the competition and the perfect score rating of 10 according to sofascore statistics, the Polish star was arguably the best forward this week.
Player of the week: Robert Lewandowski
Manager of the week: Napoli’s Luciano Spalletti
