After sustaining varying degrees of injury in a mob attack at Okushibeade, at least one person died and seven others are being treated in a community-based health planning and services (CHPS) compound.
The attack is said to have happened on Saturday, September 3, 2022, in the Ga West Municipality.
Six local Nigerian men and two female workers from the Ga West Municipal Health Directorate were among those killed.
When the sad tragedy occurred, the nurses were on official duty in Okushibeade, Mayikpor, and neighboring settlements immunizing children against polio.
The motive of the incident has yet to be determined, but the mob, in their rage at the Nigerians, damaged the legs of the nurses who happened to be in the path of the enraged adolescents.
Nigerians, on the other hand, were brutally injured with items such as cutlasses, as evidenced by large slashes on their heads and arms.
One of the Nigerians whose health was critical and required referral died en route to the indicated intensive care center.
In an interview with Madam Margaretta Chandi, municipal health director, she stated that plans are being taken to replace the affected health workers on the immunization program.
According to her, the nurses’ current condition will prevent them from continuing their immunization duties.
She further stated that the Nigerians are responding favorably to the treatment.
Following receipt of the information, Ga West Municipal Chief Executive Clement Wilkinson paid a visit to the victims to express his condolences.
He promised that the authorities would collaborate with the local police to bring the criminals to justice.
