His Excellency the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, was blasted for his insistence on completing the construction of the National Cathedral even during this hard times. Even before the discussions of the IMF started, the current government, led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo were advised to halt all processes in the construction of the Cathedral. Little did we know that the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, was secretly taking money from the Consolidated Fund to source the construction without the approval from Parliament.
Today, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, Paul Opoku Mensah, has admitted and broken his silence on the issue. He has revealed that works have come to a halt because there are no money. According to him, the workers and contractors are around but there is no money to proceed.
He said; We have the contractors and their staff outside but the workers have been suspended. We are hoping that within the next couple of weeks, as part of our fundraising and other initiatives we can begin work again.
He further revealed that they will organize another fundraising event to make another money. He admitted that the money they want is huge. But he made an assumption that since Ghana is a Christian state, should everyone contribute at least a one hundred cedi, then it will be very easy for them to complete the project in a year’s time. He explained; The money might be big in terms of volume but if indeed we have 21 million Christians and a million can give us ₵100 a month for a year, we can easily complete this in time. I refuse to believe that we can’t get a million Ghanaians out of the 21 million Christians to support this. I still have faith in the Ghanaian and I am confident that we will do this.
