The Minister for Energy Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has said that no group of people in the nation can claim the Akosombo Dam was built on their land thus they won’t pay electricity bills like the Krobos.
He made this reference in a recent interview on Asempa FM, which was centered on the ongoing misunderstanding between the Electricity Company of Ghana and some residents of the Krobo districts of the Eastern Region.
During the interview, the Minister stated that he had spoken with local traditional leaders and had requested that they meet with the ECG in order to reach an agreeable agreement that would allow the power provider to resume providing service to the region.
The so-called arrangement Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, supposedly struck with the Krobos, in which he purportedly spared them from paying energy bills for the sole reason that the Akosombo Dam is on their territory, was also criticized by NAPO.
“No one can claim that they will not pay their electricity bill. With due respect, if ECG and NEDCo supply you with light and you refuse to pay, then you don’t deserve it.
Even the residents whose property was utilized to construct the Akosombo Dam are not on strike, proving that Akosombo does not belong to the Krobo people but rather to the Akwamufie people.
They have no justification for not paying their electrical bills.
“They (sections of Krobo youth) claim Kwame Nkrumah said 50 years after Akosombo, they shouldn’t pay for electricity, that claim is illegitimate,” the Minister stressed.
