The Black Stars of Ghana placed third in the Kirin Cup held in Japan. The Black Stars lost in a shambolic performance against Japan in the first match. The defeat meant they were supposed to play Chile in the third place because Tunisia also beat them.
The match which was played in the hours of Ghana time at the Suita City Stadium ended in a goalless draw. The Ghanaians went ahead to win 3:1 on penalties. Two Ghanaian players, Alidu Seidu and experienced player Mubarak Wakasu were sent off the game for actions the referee didn’t think was fit to entertain. Goalkeeper Abdul Manaf was at his best to ensure the team stayed victorious this time.
Otto Addo made about five changes this time changing goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi. Zigi came under a lot of criticism when he conceded four goals against Japan in the opening match. Statistics show that in his last eight matches that he has kept the post, the Black Stars have won only one match which was against Mauritania. Perhaps Ati Zigi has not been lucky anytime he keeps the post.
The win gives Otto Addo and his men a big boost as they prepare for other competitions the world cup which will be played later this year. Congratulations to the Black Stars and better luck to the Chileans.
