Lawyer Kissi Agyabeng, the Special Prosecutor has indicated that he will be going after the nation’s election management body for various breaches in the conduct of elections in Ghana.
The Special Prosecutor was speaking at a forum to mark International Anti-Corruption day and anti-corruption week in Accra on Thursday December 9 when he served that notice.
“Any presiding officer, any returning officer who is minded to alter results or to willfully misstate the result we will come and pick them for prosecution”, Mr. Agyabeng stated in his opening address.
According to the criminal lawyer, electoral fraud is fraud and fall under the mandate of the OSP. Lawyer Agyabeng added that his office had received several allegations of electoral fraud in the last election at district through regional to national levels and prosecution will commence soon.
In a 3News.com report sighted by CitizenOne, the lawyer maintained that his office is serious in the fight against corruption and graft in Ghana. This he noted will be fought head-on as he pledged during his vetting and swearing in. To start with, he said his office had already put in place measures to review all Government contracts which have been awarded since January this year.
“We will also carry out anti-corruption risk assessment and review from January 2021 of all major public contracts, legislations and draft legislations,” he said.
Mr. Kissi Agyabeng used the opportunity to encourage Government to adequately resource his office to enable it carry out its mandate. According to him, without adequate resources, all his good intentions will remain merely intentions and nothing more.
Kissi Agyabeng’s selection as a replacement to Martin Amidu was met with the usual propaganda, allegations and counter allegations on his competence and weight. Yet many trusted Lawyer Kissi Agyabeng to be able to carry the heavy cross of the special prosecutor job. In fact his answers to questions during his vetting proofed his critics wrong. It was therefore not surprising that even the opposition leader Mr. John Mahama had to sing his praises during his thank you tour to the Eastern region.
Do you believe the SP will be able to prosecute the Jean Mensa and Bossman Asare electoral officers as promised? What if Jean Mensa herself is involved? Take to the comments section to share your thoughts.
