Ghanaian Afropop and Afrobeat singer, Wendy Shay has announced that she will campaign and vote against the NPP’s proposed ban on musicians advertising alcohol and gambling companies.
Her passionate statement comes months after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) banned musicians from promoting betting and alcohol companies.
Earlier this year, rules were implemented in the system prohibiting celebrities with large followings from endorsing any betting or alcoholic company, citing the fact that these followers look up to the celebrities and may copy them if they engage in anything that appears immoral.
Wendy Shay, who appears to be the sole artist who has been adversely affected by the restriction, has bemoaned it on all of her internet platforms since it was enacted.
She has once again turned to Twitter to complain, this time claiming that she will not vote for the NPP because they will hinder her and her colleagues from doing their jobs.
Wendy Shay wrote in her screenplay that any party that can eliminate the prohibition will get her vote.
She went on to say that musicians aren’t supposed to be impoverished, but that this isn’t the case in Ghana.
