The European Union (EU) has asked the President George Weah-led Liberian Government to remove ban on same-sex marriages and other civil libraries.
EU’s representative in Liberia, Laurent Delahousse, made the call while speaking at a human rights forum in Monrovia, the national capital of Liberia.
According to him, “the penal code of Liberia continues to criminalise” consensual sexual relationships by same-sex couples.
That, he argued, violated international laws protecting the social rights of LGBT individuals.
He also urged the Liberian Government to “take immediate action to issue an executive order” banning female genital mutilation and other perceived harmful traditional practices.
