The strong rivalry between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak spans over centuries and upto date, remains one of the biggest fixture in the Ghana Premier League. Prior to the 2021 season, the rivalry between the Phobians from Accra and the Porcupine Warriors from Kumasi was the highest point of interest with both women and men fighting over dominance in the premier League.
This year’s Premier League is no different from the previous years but this year table comes with so much tension which can reignite history if care is not taken. Currently the Accra Hearts of Oak is leading the table with 56 Points. Following keenly is the Kumasi Asante Kotoko also having 56 Points. The decisive game comes off this Sunday and as ‘tentious’ as it promises to be, history is likely to repeat itself and if this happens, it’s going to be a lost game for both teams and Ghana as a whole.
Sunday being the decisive game, many things will likely to happen and measures must be put in place to avoid May 9 disaster repeating itself in this tense game coming.
The Ghana Football Association must do the needful to ensure that supporters obey all the rules during and after the game. Some disasters happen because of the facilities that are used to host the football ground.
There must be proper policing to moderate things on Sunday. Generally, it is believed that the police know what they are doing there to protect people which is true for major games like Asante Kotoko versus Hearts of Oak. History has it that, during the May 9, 2001, the police closed all exits of the stadium and released tear gas on the protesting fans. People trying to run to the exits got crushed, walked on and suffocated Killing 127 people. On Sunday, the atmosphere will be tensed but proper measures must be put in place to avoid any accidents.
Also supporters must know that this is a game and anything can happen, referees do make mistakes but supporters cannot put law into their own hands and cause any mayhem when they think their team is losing.
