The family of the late former General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party(NPP), Lawyer Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John in the political circles has announced June 3, as the day for his burial at Sakora -Wonoo in the Ashanti Region.
Even though the date June 3, will remind many Ghanaians of the twin-disaster that claimed the lives of about one hundred and fifty Ghanaians at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra after a heavy downpour that lasted for about two hours, it will also be a day of sorrow and day a to celebrate the life of the late Sir John in the Ashanti Region by his family and friends in government and outside government.
The late Sir John was the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission, the commission tasked by the government to preserve all forest reserves across the country.
He died last year after a short illness at the country’s premier teaching hospital in the Greater Accra Region, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Sir John after serving as General Secretary of the party, was jostling for the position of National Chairman of the party before his untimely death.
The delays in the burial of the late party scribe have been the talk of the town especially among some NPP supporters in the Ashanti Region.
In particular, when some irate youth supported by the Queen Mother Sakora-Wonoo, the birthplace of the party scribe went on a demonstration threatening ‘no road. no burial’.
The people of Sakora -Wonooo want their dilapidated roads fixed before the burial of the one-time powerful opinion leader.
However, the government has assured them their roads will be fixed in honour of the late party scribe before his burial.
