A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko says he never heard his cousin, the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promised to give each pupil a bar of chocolate through the school feeding programme.
President Akufo-Addo in October 2017 at the World Cocoa Day celebration in Kumasi promised that his government will roll out a programme that will see every school-going child from basic to the secondary level enjoy free chocolate every day.
“It is for this reason that the Ministry of Agriculture through COCOBOD, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through the school feeding programme, and the Ministry of Education through the Ghana Education Service, are to ensure the sustained provision of cocoa beverages and chocolates to school children from primary school to secondary level,” he was quoted to have said.
The President further explained that “…[our] target is to provide every Ghanaian student with a bar of chocolate or cocoa beverage each day whilst in school.”
This he said, “has been given the needed impetus by some manufacturing companies who have agreed to support the programme.”
But speaking on Accra-based Citi TV in an interview monitored by MyNews, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko said he was unaware of that unfulfilled promise by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government.
“Ow really, one Chocolate, that’s interesting. I see but I never heard of that promise. But it’s actually a promise that I think we should push it. You know for two reasons, 1. it will help the industry, 2. we need to grow this culture of consuming what we grow
On why It’s not happening, Gabby responded “Well, I’m hearing for the first time”.
