The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says moves by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to paint him as an anti-Volta person is artificial and created just for political gain by some political actors.
Prior to the start of the compilation of the new voters’ register, there were claims by the opposition NDC that the President through the Defence Minister had deployed Military men to the Volta Region precisely Ketu South to intimidate people to prevent them from coming out in their numbers to register.
The opposition alleged that the government identify the people in the Volta Region as foreigners especially from Togo, reason why it had deployed soldiers to the Volta Region.
However, Defence Minister mounted a strong defence against the claims by the NDC indicating that the deployments were made even before the Electoral Commission set out to undertake its Voters’ Register Exercise.
Reacting to the claims in a virtual meeting with his campaign communication advisory team, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo noted that this year’s campaign should be that which will be devoid of attacks based on religion, tribes and even on gender.
“We have to do a campaign in Ghana which is not about where you come from. Whipping up ethnic sentiments. It has never helped this country and it will not help us. We should be the very first to recognise it.”
He further indicated that there is the need for the NPP to stress on the Ghana project because Ghana is a diverse country made up of a number of people adding that apart from the diversity in where we come from, there is diversity in religion in the country but that should not be the discourse.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said what should be trumpeted should be the competencies, records, achievements of both leaders.
“All this stuff about we have some political agenda, we want to disenfranchise people in the far North and Volta region. I don’t understand where that is coming from. It’s deliberate, it’s artificial. Those who know the political mechanic of Ghana knows that, that is artificial and it’s been done for a very short term political gain. I’m not sure it’s a legitimate way of advancing a political agenda. Certainly, it’s not one that I will want to promote.”
