Former President and founder of the National Democratic Congress(NDC) Mr Jerry John Rawlings has said that he has never been corrupt in his entire life.
Known for bashing leaders such as former presidents Kufuor and Mahama, Mr Rawlings said “power has a way of corrupting people. And I’m very much careful so I don’t fall in a trap.”
When asked a question by renowned journalist Kwaku Sakyi-Addo in an interview on Asaase Radio monitored by MyNewsGh whether or not he has ever become corrupt, Mr Rawlings said “No, no, I was never corrupt.”
“This is the benefit that they [People] are trying to tarnish my image because I was not as vulnerable as most of our people are”, he stressed.
He also mentioned that PV Obeng was one of such people in his government who was incorruptible.
“PV was one of such persons, for instance in terms of avoiding being corrupted he stayed away from dubious things.”
He added that PV was so smart and good that “he was my de facto Prime Minister; that man was such brilliant.”
Mr Rawlings has been very critical of past and present governments, describing Mr. Kufuor and Mr. Mahama’s governments as very corrupt.
Late Kofi Annan forced me to open a foreign bank account – Rawlings
It would be recalled that the Former President of the Republic of Ghana- head of state for a combine period of nineteen (19) years last year revealed that but for the intervention of a respected figure Kofi Annan who ‘forced’ him to open a foreign bank account, he had never owned any bank account outside the shores of Ghana.
He was addressing Cadres and National Democratic Congress in Kumasi over the last weekend where he urged the cadres of the party to continue to stand for and by the principles underlying the founding of the NDC.
“My wife and I opened a foreign account at the urging of former United Nations General Secretary, Kofi Annan. He told me he will need me to help in the UN anti AIDS campaign and once in while the UN will pay me some allowance.” He said.
“My wife and I were in office for nineteen years, by the time we were leaving office, we did not have even one dollar foreign account”, he added.
He further revealed that the foreign bank account was no longer functional following the closure of the program for which it was opened.
“The campaign has ended long ago and that account has been closed. I don’t have any hidden foreign account and she (his wife) does not’’.
