Ninety-Seven(97) medical doctors and other health workers in the Ashanti region have contracted the novel coronavirus, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported.
Out of the number, thirty eight are currently on admission receiving treatment.
Regional Director of Health, Dr Emmanuel Tenkorang who announced the development at a press briefing in Kumasi said one of the doctors, Dr Harry Boateng, the Medical Director of the Kwadasa SDA Hospital who was instrumental in the fight against the disease has succumbed to death after getting infected.
According to him, the case count for the disease in the region stands at 2403, with 38 deaths and 778 recoveries.
All the treatment centres in the region according to the GHS are currently full to capacity; the 207-bed isolation centres across the region are almost full with 156 beds occupied.
“We must all appreciate the challenge were are facing at this moment. We want to increase the number of beds at the treatment centres from 38 to 100 by the close of the week as the numbers keep rising”, Dr Tenkorang said.
