Broadcast Journalist with the Despite Group, Afia Pokuaa widely known as Vim Lady has said that the insult on her person especially by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a result of their push to prevent the compilation of the new voters’ register.
Afia Pokuaa received backlash after she reported that the Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu had not tested positive for COVID-19 and was merely relaxing at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) managing diabetes.
Her report which she posted on her Facebook page said “Spoke to the minister of health. He says he’s fine and doesn’t have COVID but only needed rest and his usual medication”.
However, the President of Ghana in his eleventh address to the country confirmed that the Health Minister had tested for the deadly virus and had been admitted at the University of Ghana Hospital in Accra.
Afia Pokuaa after the President’s speech received backlash from especially users of various social media platforms in the country.
They tagged her a liar for the information she put out concerning the Minister’s condition because her claims were not supported by enough evidence.
But reacting to the insults on the social media on her radio show, ‘Egyaso Gyaso”, the lady known popularly as Vim Lady said people backlashing her should use their GHC 2 worth of data to buy facemask to protect themselves.
According to her “Don’t make the issue about me. Vim Lady is not a kid. My parents didn’t give birth to me two days ago. I’ve been in the media for several years and I understand the ethics of the profession. I also know the law.
“People are saying Afia Pokuaa has lied so Afia Pokuaa should come and apologise. Apologise for what? I reported what I was told? Why is everybody especially NDC, why are you making it look if Minister has COVID it will give you automatic 1 million votes and why will NPP cover up if the Minister has tested positive. If the Minister has or doesn’t have how will it affect your status?”
“Think about yourself. President now says it’s compulsory to wear facemask so are you having the facemask? That’s what you should concern yourself with. This whole things that has been politicized and they are blaming Afia Pokuaa for bringing problems is because of voters register. If you’ve a problem with the voters register take me out because I’ve no stake in the voters register. I’ve said that I won’t even go and register for the card like I did with the NIA card because I don’t have that time and I won’t risk my life that COVID-19 is in Ghana and I will join queues to register for a voters ID car.”
