In line with the Electoral Commission’s (EC’s) quest to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections, the Central Regional Deputy Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Alex Sakyi Manu has sent a strong warning to eligible Ghanaians to desist from vouching for strangers and non-Ghanaians.
According to the Deputy Director, it an Electoral offense to guarantee for strangers and anyone caught doing so will face the full rigours of the law.
“If you guarantee for someone who is not a Ghanaian and you are not caught then you are lucky but if you are caught the law will deal with you” Mr. Sakyi Manu added.
Mr. Sakyi Manu who made this known to the media during the biometric pilot voters registration exercise in Cape Coast, added that guarantors cannot guarantee for more than 10 people.
The Deputy Director therefore appealed to the public to get ready for the upcoming registration exercise since the pilot registration exercise has been done successfully.
The pilot exercise attracted observers, party agents, political parties representatives including opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) members, the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP), Convention People’s Party(CPP), GUM and PNC among others.
On the social distancing protocol, MyNewsGh observed that, the Central Region EC is abiding by the Coronavirus(COVID-19) safety protocols where the Commission marked the ground to separate those in the queue, at least one meter apart.
MyNewsGh again observed that all those who took part in the pilot registration exercise washed their hands, sanitized their hands and EC officials themselves were in a full PPEs.
Some journalists who went there for news also had the opportunity to participate in the exercise.
The Central Regional Director of Elections of the NDC, Mrs. Gloria Koomson was present at the EC premises with her team to observe the ongoing pilot registration exercise despite the NDC objecting the new voters’ register exercise.
On his part, the Central Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Secretary, Mr. Takyi Mensah told MyNewsGh that Ghanaians are indeed ready to register.
He appealed to Ghanaians to make sure their names are on the voters’ register to enable them to vote massively for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to retain power, come 2021.
