Aspiring flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alban Bagbin, has outdoored former Information Minister, Fritz Baffour as his Campaign and Communications Director.
Mr. Bagbin unveiled Fritz Baffour at a press conference in Accra today [Monday].
Mr. Baffour will spearhead all campaign strategies and official communication of Bagbin in his bid to contest as flagbearer of the NDC and subsequently lead the party in the 2020 presidential election.
Fritz Baffour, who is also a former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South constituency surprisingly was part of the delegation that went with another flagbearer aspirant, Kojo Bonsu, to call on former President and founder of the NDC, Jerry John Rawlings earlier this month.
It is unclear why he may have shifted camp, but Fritz Baffour confirmed his allegiance to Bagbin in a post on his Facebook wall days ago.
“Hello folks, I hope all is well. I just want to say that I love Ghana, so I do not have the luxury of standing on the sidelines when it comes to stepping into the breach….I have decided to work extremely hard to get a friend and colleague elected as flagbearer of the NDC. It will not be easy but to borrow from the motto of the vaunted British SAS. ‘Who dares wins? ‘I’m opting for Alban Bagbin! I’m going to be extremely busy pushing the envelope for the next few weeks so pardon my occasional absence. God bless Ghana,” he noted.
After his outdooring, he called on party faithful to support the campaign of the former Majority Leader to enable him to wrestle power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in 2020.
He further advised members and delegates of the party to be decorous in their campaigns.
“At a certain time, I said I was not ready to support anybody and I have now made my choice and my choice is A.S.K. Bagbin,” he declared at the press conference.
Some have described Fritz Baffour’s decision to support Bagbin as a betrayal to former president John Mahama, who was Vice President while Mr. Baffour was the Information Minister.
But Fritz Baffour has not hidden his dissatisfaction over John Mahama’s performance when he was elected to the high office of President.
In June 2018, while speaking at the anniversary celebration of the June 4 revolution, he blamed John Mahama’s administration for the party’s election 2016 defeat.
He said the NDC government under Mahama departed from the core values of the NDC which are transparency, probity, accountability and social justice.
